The desert in dog days early afternoon -
Time for a nap my mind doest croon.
A short little slumber, refreshment of sorts -
To escape the relentless desert sun thwarts.
Yet as I lay upon my pillow drifting -
Sleep gives way to the words that are sifting -
Through my mind demanding some order -
A life, a statement, they continue to loiter.
I roll to my side ignoring the lot -
But the words continue, they won’t be forgot.
First one, now two words, oh no maybe three -
Oh why, oh why wont these words let me be?
I surrender you win, I am now on my feet -
Be what you will, pen and paper do meet.
In scribbling fervor I will thus banish thee -
At last oh thank God, you words are now free.

Somewhere out there in the winds she travels -
She’s the suns energy unraveled -
Looking for a place to rest weary bone -
A place quiet, peaceful, she can be alone -
She can catch her breath she can close her eyes -
Escape life’s trails, and deceptive lies -
Though her heart is golden and in goodness thrives -
The pests, the feeders, evils swarm like a hive -
To touch her, to use her, to drain her life force -
Her resolve holds strong against life’s remorse.
This woman I admire I readily boast -
I pray for her daily and in unison we toast -
This woman, this child, this angel that’s broken -
She is God’s own and will not be forsaken -
For in her is great ambition and fight -
In the dark depths she gives forth light -
Ever beginning anew down life’s crooked road -
One foot at a time with her cumbersome load.
Her beauty has stayed, and inside she’s gentle -
Tempest adorns her though like some armored mantle -
Can’t lay down now, quit, nor admit defeat -
For winds of change down upon her beat -
And one more battle to round the bend -
To a place of kindness where peace will lend -
A time for rest and healing of heart -
To dream, to plan and to again start -
Her forward march to her castle on high -
For just down the path on the horizon it lies.

America, the beautiful daughter of Mother Earth must bear the burdens of her temporary leaders, yet she has done nothing but shelter and nurture us.
